"Granny Despina” - The first Macedonian motion picture (1905)This footage is the very first movie shot in Macedonia, in the city of Bitola. It was made by two Macedonians - the Manaki Brothers and the year was 1905.Despina was the name of the grandmother of Janaki and Milton Manaki. She was recorded while weaving with a spindle in one high-angle shot. The first motion picture of Macedonia and, in fact, of the Balkans, was made by these two Balkans’ cinematographic pioneers.The film was created in standard technique, without sound, in black and white and 35mm. It lasts 15 seconds.The Manaki Brothers were Vlach-Macedonian photographers and filmmakers born in the small village of Avdela, near Grevena, Aegean Macedonia, today in Greece.
